The Suffolk News-Herald reported today that there is a meeting set for Wednesday at 5:00 to 7:30 pm in the Golden Leaf Commons, 1300 Greensville County Circle, in Emporia to discuss an alternative route through Suffolk for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. The natural gas pipeline is set to run from West Virginia to North Carolina, which would include portions of Suffolk, Franklin/Southampton County, and/or Brunswick County. One of the considerations taken into account is “landowner considerations.” Under the Takings Clause, a government must show that the taking of property must be for public use, as defined by statute and court cases. Further, if the government makes the showing, they must also provide just compensation.
