For more than 25 years, four crime types have comprised the majority of federal felonies and Class A misdemeanors: drugs, immigration, firearms and fraud, theft, or embezzlement. This trend continued throughout the year 2020 as these crimes accounted for nearly 86.4% of all cases reported to the Commission. Above all else were felonies sitting at 97.0% of cases reported.
Drugs were the second most common federal crime in the year 2020. There were roughly 16,829 total cases reported to the Commission which accounted for 26.1% of all cases. This is a decrease of about 3,564 cases or 17.5% from the previous year of 2019.

Fraud, theft, or embezzlement totaled out to 7.5% of all reported federal cases. Under this category, we see the largest percentage decrease among the four major crime types.
